Project School to get KaBOOM! playground

Volunteers are now being sought to help teachers, students and other stakeholders of The Project School install a playground at the second-year charter school located at 22nd and Yandes streets in the Near Northside.

More than 200 volunteers are needed to make the effort a success, school officials said. The new playground’s design is based on drawings created by children who participated in a Design Day event in June.

The playground will be one of 10 being built this year by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group and KaBOOM! in a partnership creating playgrounds that will eventually serve more than 100,000 children.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., KaBOOM! is a national non-profit organization dedicated to saving play. Through community building, the organization is focused on giving every child in America a great place to play within walking distance.

The Aug. 20 work day at The Project School will begin with a kick-off ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Work is expected to conclude by 3 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Meanwhile, construction is under way at the school to renovate second-floor space in the former National Auto factory. That work will eliminate the need for portable classrooms used the past year at the school which serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
