The first of three public input sessions will be conducted Thursday, March 25, as part of an effort to raise the profile of Mass Ave to visitors to the city – especially those coming for the 2012 Super Bowl, as well as other major events such as Final Fours, Indianapolis Motor Speedway events and major conventions.
The subject of the session swill be the Mass Ave Placemaking Plan, an effort launched by Riley Area Development Corp. as a follow-up to the nearly 10-year-old Mass Ave Commercial Development Plan.
Early ideas which have been circulating to create an atmosphere range from increased transportation between the heart of Downtown and Mass Ave, street art, music, and festival lighting on or over the street.
All of the sessions will be in the Max Kade Room on the first level of the Athenaeum. Each session has a different agenda:
– 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 25, to present project direction and purpose, revisit past planning efforts, brainstorm ideas and build energy around the plan.
– 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, to provide a project update, revisit the first planning session, brainstorm ideas and continue to build momentum.
– 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 29, to present the final plan.
The planning process is being guided by Schmidt Associates, an architectural, engineering and design firm headquartered along Mass Ave. Much of the work is being donated by that firm.

I’m looking forward to the meeting. Hopefully there will be some big ideas.
