A new non-profit charter management company known as Schools Building Communities is currently gauging the need for and interest in a charter school to be located on the Near Northside.
If developed, the school would be located in the former automotive plant at 22nd and Yandes streets now known as the National Design Factory. That building already houses one charter school – The Project School, which is in its second year serving elementary students.
Schools Building Communities, commonly known as SBC, has established partnerships with several other local and non-local organizations, including The Project School and Development Concepts, Inc.
SBC is currently working to survey residents of the Martindale-Brightwood and King Park neighborhoods, as well as other surrounding neighborhoods, to determine the demand for a charter high school. Neighbors can take part in the survey by going to www.sbcworks.org and scrolling down to “What it would mean to have a high school….”
SBC officials said their organization seeks to leverage the resources and expertise of exemplary national education intermediaries to establish a network of high-performing small school models. They said SBC will distinguish itself by its ability to recruit a highly talented and experienced team from diverse education and industry sectors.
The goal, they said, is to deliver equitable and effective learning for all students, combining the best of 20th century education with the 21st century reform change that is so often discussed. According to SBC’s website, their strategy for change “is to integrate new frontiers in innovation, technology, collaboration and the learning sciences.”

Wow! Wonderful coverage and it was unexpected. We even have an update at the top of our website as we submitted our charter prospectus to Mayor Ballard’s office on Monday morning. If anyone has any questions for Schools Building Communities, feel free to email me at bhoover@sbcworks.org. And thank you Urban Times!
