Urban Element’s new owner isn’t tinkering with menu

When former restaurateur and Northside resident Steve Roberts decided to get back into the food game, he got a tip from two members of his family: Urban Element.

One of his sons, Nick, studies at Young Actors Studio, headquartered in the Athenaeum. After classes, he and his mom, Michele, would land at Urban Element for some food. They were impressed – and so was Roberts when he found out the St. Joseph neighborhood restaurant was for sale.

But after taking ownership of the business in July, Roberts wanted to assure customers that they don’t have to worry about their strawberry chicken salad or Cajun tilapia sandwich. Those popular dishes – the entire menu, in fact – are staying put. Instead, Roberts is putting his focus on “sprucing up,” including a new bar, new flooring and better signage.

Roberts, who has spent several years out of the restaurant business after spending  u u many years working at such places as Del Frisco’s on Monument Circle, said he was delighted to find a solid Downtown restaurant to buy. “I’m a passionate Indy guy,” he said.

Urban Element, founded in 2004 by Marc and Shea Rousselle, is located at 901 N. Pennsylvania St. The restaurant is now open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and for dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursdays, and 5 to 11 p.m. (or later) Fridays and Saturdays, when there is also  frequently live music.

Roberts said he is also planning to open for Saturday and Sunday brunch, possibly by mid-September.

And while Roberts works on upgrades, he is also looking to relocate the family from the suburbs. His two oldest sons have taken a step further – enrolling in Herron High School. Daniel is a sophomore, Nick a freshman. A third son, Ian, is a fifth-grader at another charter school, the Hoosier Academy.
